에디슨과 함께하는
미국의 탄생과 남북전쟁

기업가의 시선으로 바라 본
미국 건국의 역사와 남북전쟁 (Civil War, 내전 )

이 책을 쓰게 된 동기를 저자는 저자의 서문에서 다음과 같이 밝히고 있다 .
“ Edison 나이 18 세 때인 , 1865 년 4 월 9 일 남군 총사령관 Robert Lee 장군은
북군 총사령관 율리시즈 그랜트 장군에게 항복한다 .
비로소 장장 4 년간 진행되면서 당시 미국인구의 10% 인 300 만명을 희생시킨 ,
미국 내전 Civil War 는 공식적으로 끝난다 .

그로부터 6 일 뒤 워싱턴 DC, 포드극장에서 연극을 관람하던 링컨 대통령이 암살당한다.
남북전쟁이 끝난 후 , 남부지역의 참상에 절망한 Edison 은 브라질로 이민을 갈려고 뉴올리언즈로 내려갔다 .

당시 영국 정부의 무분별하고 , 임시방편적인 조세정책에 대한 저항운동으로 ‘ 대표없인 , 과세없다 . No Taxation, without Representation! ’ 라는 구호를 전면에 내세우고 , 1775 년 부터 1783 년 까지 지속된 미국 독립혁명전쟁 때 , 에디슨의 증조부인 John Edison 은 영국편에 서서 워싱턴 장군부대와 싸웠다 .
그러나 또 다른 친척 할아버지인 Thomas Edison 은 독립혁명군으로 영국군과 싸웠다 . 이것이 저자가 Edison 을 연구하면서 , 미국의 탄생과 미국 내전 Civil War 에 관심을 갖게 된 동기이다 . ”

이처럼 이 책은 좀 특이한 미국의 건국의 역사와 남북전쟁 (Civil War, 내전 ) 에 대한 책이다 .

이 책의 저자는 지난 30 여년을 미국 학술연구정보회사인 IHS Markit 과 미국전기전자공학회 (IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 와 미국자동차공학회 (SAE Society of Automotive Engineers) 의 한국서 비스주관사의 일을 하면서 느낀 미국에 대한 생각을 이 책에 담았다 .

이 책은 총 357 쪽으로 , 서문과 4 장으로 구성되어 있다 . 제 1 장에는 네델란 드 이민자 가계인 에디슨 가계의 역사와 왜 , TA Edison 은 오하이오주 밀란 Milan 에서 태어났으면 , 왜 , 미시건주 포트 휴런 Port Huron 으로 이사를 가 서 , 열차판매원이 되었는지와 에디슨의 결혼과 자녀에 대해 기술하였고 , 제 2 장에는 오늘날 5G 모바일 통신세계의 출발점이라고 할 수 있는 1836 년 새뮤엘 모스 Samuel Morse 의 전신발명과 사업화 과정에 대해 먼저 기술하 였고 , 어떻게 어린 에디슨이 열차판매원에서 전신원 plug 이되어 , 발명벤처 사업가의 길로 접어들었는지에 대해 개괄적으로 기술하고 있다 .

혁명국가 미국의 탄생과정을 그린 제 3 장에서는 미국이민의 시작과 개척과정 , 그리고 영국 , 프랑스 , 네델란드의 America 식민지 쟁탈전에 대해 기술하였고 , 조 지 워싱턴 George Washington 을 필두로 당시 미국 국부들의 영국과의 독립 투쟁전개과정과 독립전쟁에 대해서 시간대별로 기술하였다 .. 제 4 장에서는 이 책의 하이라이트라고 할 수 있는 ‘ 남북전쟁 (Civil War, 내전 ) 에 대해 전 쟁 발발 원인과 그 전개 과정을 역시 시간대별로 기술하고 있다 .

사실 , 저자는 이 책에서 가장 중점을 둔 장은 4 장인 남북전쟁과 Abraham Lincoln 대통령에 대해서이다 . 그래서 제 3 장의 미국의 건국의 역사도 왜 , 남북전쟁이 발생하였는가 하는 원인을 찾 아 가는 과정으로 기술하고 있다 . 저자 가 남북전쟁을 알아보는 과정에서 , 이 전쟁이 상상을 초월할 정도로 처절한 전쟁이라는 것을 알게 되었다 . 당시 미 국 인구가 3,000 만명이 안되었는데 , 인 구의 10% 인 약 300 만명이 죽거나 부상 을 당하거나 , 행방불명이 되었다고 역 사는 기록하고 있다 .

사망자만 약 100 만명이었다는데 , 이는 이 후 미국이 참전한 어느 전쟁의 사망자보다 더 많은 수치이다 . 6.25 때 사망한 군인은 한국군 138,000 여명 , 북한군 50만명 , 중공군 15만명 , 미군을 포함한 UN 군이 4만명으로 도합 83 만명 정도였다고 한다 .

1865 년 5 월 조지아주 앤더슨빌 남군 포로수용소에서 발견된 북군포로 사진 . 말로 형언할 수 없을 정도로 앙상한 몰골에 경악을 금치 못하게 한다 .( 책 292 쪽 )

베트남전에서 미군의 사망자 수가 58,315명 , 1 차 세계 대전 때의 미군 사망자가 360,300 명 , 2 차 세계대전 때가 약 407,000 명의 미국이 희생을 당했다 한 다 . 이러한 수치만 놓고 볼 때 , 1861 년 4월부터 1865 년 4월까지 있었던 미국 남북전쟁 때의 희생자가 얼마나 많은지 알 수 있을 것이다 .

탱크와 비행기 가 등장하기 전이라는 것을 생각하여 보면 , 당시 전쟁이 얼마나 치열하였 고 , 처절하였는지 짐작해 볼 수 있다 . 무엇이 80 여년전 함께 새롭게 국가를 탄생시킨 국민을 남북으로 갈라놓아 이렇게 처절하게 싸우고 죽이게 만 들었는가 ?

사진을 보면 알겠지만 , 전쟁이 끝나고 , 남군 포로수용소에서 발견된 북군 포로의 사진은 이 전쟁이 얼마나 처절한 증오의 전쟁이었는가를 알 수 있다 .

그리고 1865 년 4 월 9 일 Lee 장군의 항복으로 전쟁이 끝난 후 , 미국은 빠르게 정치적으로 안정이 되고 , 사회적으로 통합이 되면서 , 경제적 으로 영국을 제치고 세계 제 1 의 경제 대국이 되었다 .

무엇이 엄청난 국 가적 재난을 이렇게 빨리 극복하고 , 미국의 국가통합을 이룩하도록 만들었는가 ? 우리의 6.25 전쟁을 생각하면 상상이 안 되는 일의 연속이 1860 년대 미국에서 일어난 것이다 . 저자는 바로 이러한 이유로 미국의 남북전쟁을 좀 더 깊게 들여다 봤다 .

누가 뭐래도 미국은 현재 우리나라의 최고의 우방이다 . 우리는 미국을 잘 아는 것 같으나 , 잘 모른다 .

우리는 미국을 좀 더 잘 알 필요가 있다 . 기존 의 미국 역사에 관한 책이 전공 학자들이 쓴 책이나 , 번역서가 많아 , 중심을 잡고 읽기가 쉽지 않으나 , 이 책은 오랜 기간 미국과 무역을 하고 있는 기업가가 써 , 일반인들은 보다 쉽게 미국의 두 개의 국가적 사건인 독립혁명전쟁과 남북전쟁 그리고 , 오늘날 미국 산업 발전의 토대가 되는 발명 벤처사업에 대해서도 이 책을 통해 많은 힌트를 얻게 되리라 생각되어 일독 을 권한다 .
